The sterile white lights of the emergency ward hummed with a relentless, nerve-fraying buzz. Outside, a torrential autumn rain lashed against the reinforced glass, mirroring the chaotic storm raging inside Anthony’s chest. He paced the length of the corridor, his boots clicking against the linoleum in a frantic, uneven rhythm. His hands were still trembling, stained with the indelible panic of the moment the ambulance doors had slammed shut.
Shayla.
The name echoed in his mind like a siren. Just hours ago, everything had felt like it was spinning out of control—the tension, the unspoken words, the sudden, terrifying flash of the accident that had brought them all to this razor's edge.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway, fast and heavy. Anthony looked up to see D. Nisha rushing toward him, her face drained of color, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and lingering disbelief. Behind her, Amber followed closely, wrapping her coat tight against the chill of the night, her expression carved from pure worry.
"Anthony! Oh god, Anthony, tell me it’s not true," Nisha breathed out, catching her breath as she reached him. Her voice cracked, the usual sharpness in her tone entirely replaced by raw, trembling fear. "What happened? How is she?"
"They’re still inside," Anthony said, his voice hoarse, barely recognizable to his own ears. He ran a hand through his disheveled hair. "The doctors... they rushed her straight into trauma. They haven't told me anything yet. Nisha, she... she took the worst of it. She pushed me out of the way just as—" He couldn't finish the sentence. The image of Shayla collapsing against the pavement played behind his eyelids on an endless, agonizing loop.
Amber stepped forward, placing a steadying hand on Anthony’s arm. Despite the complicated history, the unspoken jealousies, and the tangled web of secrets that had bound—and nearly broken—their little circle over the past few weeks, all of that dissolved under the harsh reality of a hospital corridor.
"She’s strong, Anthony," Amber said softly, her voice steady despite the tremor in her fingers. "Shayla has always been a fighter. You know that. She’s not going down like this."
Minutes stretched into agonizing hours. The digital clock on the wall seemed stuck in time. Every time the heavy swinging doors of the trauma unit pushed open, all three of them flinched, waiting for a verdict.
Finally, a doctor in blue scrubs stepped through the doors, peeling off a pair of latex gloves. He looked exhausted, his brow furrowed with deep lines of concern.
Anthony was the first to spring forward, followed instantly by Nisha and Amber. "Doctor? How is she? Can we see her?"
The doctor offered a cautious, measured look. "Are you family?"
"I’m... I’m her fiancΓ©," Anthony said, the word catching in his throat—a title forged in a moment of utter desperation and love that he hadn't yet had the chance to truly prove. "I'm Anthony. Please, just tell us."
A flicker of understanding crossed the doctor's face. "Mr. Anthony. Your fiancΓ© is in serious condition. The impact caused significant internal trauma, and she suffered a severe concussion. We had to perform emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding. It was touch-and-go for a while, but... she made it through the procedure."
A collective, shuddering exhale filled the space between them. Nisha pressed a hand to her mouth, tears finally spilling over her lashes, while Amber let out a shaky breath, leaning back against the wall.
"Thank God," Anthony whispered, his knees suddenly feeling weak. "Can she... can she wake up?"
"She’s currently in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit to let her body heal and minimize brain swelling," the doctor continued, his tone turning grave. "The next forty-eight hours are critical. She is stable for now, but she isn't out of the woods yet. Only one person at a time can go in, and only for a few minutes. She needs absolute rest."
An hour later, Anthony stood beside Shayla’s bed in the dimly lit ICU. The room was a symphony of rhythmic beeps from the heart monitor and the gentle, mechanical hiss of a ventilator assisting her breathing.
Up close, the reality of it shattered him. Shayla looked so fragile against the crisp white sheets, a bandage wrapped around her head, a network of IV lines tethered to her hands. The vibrant, fiery spirit that defined her seemed momentarily locked away behind closed eyes.
Anthony pulled a chair close to the bed, carefully reaching out to take her limp, cool hand in his. He pressed it gently against his cheek, letting his warm tears fall freely onto her knuckles.
"I'm so sorry, Shayla," he choked out, his voice breaking in the quiet room. "You saved my life. But you can't leave yours behind... you can't leave us behind. We have so much left to fix. So many things I never told you."
He squeezed her hand tighter, as if his grip could pull her back from the precipice.
"You heard the doctor, right? You're a fighter. Open your eyes, Shayla. Please. Come back to me."
For a long moment, there was only the steady, metronomic beat of the monitor.
Then, just as Anthony bowed his head in defeat, praying silently to a God he hadn't spoken to in years, a tiny, almost imperceptible movement brushed against his thumb.
Anthony’s head snapped up. Her fingers—ever so slightly—had twitched against his skin.
He stared down, holding his breath, watching her face. Slowly, painfully, Shayla's brow furrowed, a faint whisper of a frown crossing her features as the fog of the medication began to pull at the edges of her consciousness.
"Shayla?" Anthony whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Shayla, can you hear me?"
A faint, shuddering breath escaped her lips, and slowly, ever so slowly, her eyelids fluttered open
